Spartanburg Medical Center (SMC) on East Wood Street is a research and teaching hospital that offers state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment for Upstate South Carolina residents. Founded on Aug. 29, 1921, as Spartanburg General Hospital, Spartanburg Regional celebrated 100 years of excellence in August 2021.

The Emergency Center is located on floor one next to the Pavilion. Services include Behavioral Health, Women’s Center, Chest Pain, Intermediate Care, Major Care, Fast Track and Level I Trauma Care. The population served includes all patients who arrive requesting medical screening exams. 


25-bed unit located on floor four in the main building. The primary population served is med/surg adult patients with a specialty in gastrointestinal diseases that may require telemetry monitoring.

19-bed unit located on floor five in the main building. The primary population served are patients with acute and chronic renal failure and those patients requiring telemetry monitoring. Peritoneal dialysis is administered at the bedside. 

30-bed unit is located on the first floor of the Gibbs Cancer Center. The primary populations served are patients with hematology/oncology conditions including palliative support, therapeutic and diagnostic care, and oncology surgeries. 

28-bed unit located on the third floor in the Montgomery Tower. The primary population served is med/surg adult patients with a specialty in urology and gynecologic surgery.

28-bed unit is located on floor four in Montgomery Tower. The primary populations served are general surgery and medical patients. 

25-bed acute medical surgical unit located on floor three of the main building. The primary population served is adult medical and surgical patients. 

4-bed pediatric intensive care unit located on floor three of the main hospital adjacent to the Pediatric Unit. The unit has continuous cardio/respiratory monitoring capability

35 Level III licensed neonatal beds located on floor two in the Montgomery Tower. Population served is birth to neonatal discharge. Provides care for neonates who have complications after birth that may include prematurity, low birth weight, sepsis, congenital anomalies and other conditions.

14-bed unit located on floor two in the Montgomery Tower. There are three surgery suites, four recovery bays, and two bays for pre-op. The unit cares for both low- and high-risk laboring patients. As a Level III Perinatal Center, the unit accepts premature and high-risk cases, as well as antepartum patients.  

24-bed adult intensive care nursing unit located on floor four of the Pavilion. The primary populations served are patients with life- threatening pulmonary/medical illnesses requiring critical care, medical and nursing management. Pavilion 4 Adult Critical Care is the primary location for level three medical patients. 

22-bed intensive care unit located on floor five of the Pavilion. The primary population served is patients with multiple traumas, complex abdominal surgery, traumatic brain injury, CVA and severe neurological deficit.  

22-bed unit located on floor six of the Pavilion. The primary populations served are pulmonary and medical patients requiring cardiac monitoring and/or high rates of oxygen, and CVA/TIA. 

28-bed unit located on floor six of the Montgomery Tower. The primary populations served are patients needing surgical intervention (including but not limited to weight loss surgery, reconstructive surgery, and trauma surgery), telemetry monitoring or medical conditions.

28-bed unit located on floor seven of the Montgomery Tower. The primary populations served are patients with traumatic orthopedic injuries requiring surgical intervention and neurosurgery patients.  

28-bed unit located on floor eight of the Montgomery Tower. The primary populations served are patients with a neurological deficit, traumatic brain injury, CVA/TIA and neurosurgery. This unit also serves as overflow for patients with fractures, traumatic injuries and total joint replacements.

The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is located on the second floor in the main building directly adjacent to the surgery. The main recovery area has 26 bays. The population served is all patients who have had surgery or been anesthetized except for CABG and neonatal patients. Additional cases include endoscopy, MRI, Laser Lead Extractions, blood patch, TEE, Cardioversion, CT and IR cases. 

Pre-Admission Testing is located on the third floor of the Physician’s Center in Suite 301. Populations served include patients preparing for surgery and optimization, interventional radiology, endoscopy and cath lab for Church Street and Mary Black campuses.  

Church Street Surgery: Level 1 Trauma
Surgery is a Level I Trauma Center. The surgery unit is located on the second floor of the main building. There are 17 peri-op operating rooms, two cystoscopy suites, three open heart surgery suites and one minor procedure room. The population served is patients requiring surgical procedures except for pediatric cardiac and organ transplant procedures.

Surgery pre-op is located on floor two of the main building adjacent to surgery. The pre-op area has 27 patient bays equipped for day-of-procedure preparation. The population served includes patients arriving for surgery, interventional radiology, imaging services, endoscopy, cath lab, and patients returning to the unit for second stage recovery/discharge.

Six endoscopic procedure rooms located on the fourth floor in the Outpatient Center. The populations served are patients with upper/lower GI dysfunctions, pulmonary dysfunctions, therapeutic and screening procedures.

32-bed cardiovascular surgery progressive care telemetry unit located on the fourth floor of the Heart Center. The primary population is post-surgical treatment of cardiac and thoracic diagnosis. 

32-bed coronary care progressive care telemetry unit located on floor five of the Heart Center. The primary populations served are adult patients with cardiac arrhythmias/conduction disorders, cardiac insufficiency and post-surgical/nonsurgical cardiac interventions. 

36-bed unit located on floor five of the main building. The primary populations served are adult patients needing surgical or medical intervention and/or telemetry, to include carotid endarterectomies, renal angioplasty, and vascular interventions. This unit also serves patients with neurological dysfunction.

12-bed unit located on floor six of the main building, which may be opened as an overflow unit to support capacity. The primary populations served are adult patients needing med/surg care and/or telemetry. 

10-bed critical care unit located on floor two in the Heart Center. The primary populations served are patients with myocardial infarctions, heart failure, respiratory failure, multi-organ system failure, cardiac arrest, sepsis, TAVR, Mitraclip and other cath lab structural heart procedures.

This procedural area is equipped with three interventional cardiac cath labs, two electrophysiology labs and one hybrid lab. The primary populations served are those who present with acute myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation and structural heart conditions.

22-bed unit located on floor six of the main building. The primary populations served are adults who present to the EC with an acute illness for which a complete evaluation and/or treatment is performed as an observation status.

Spartanburg Medical Center - Services

The lactation staff are registered nurses who have specialty training and credentials in lactation care and management. The lactation staff sees inpatients primarily on 5Tower (Mother/Baby), NICU, L&D and pediatric patients. The lactation department also provides outpatient services in the form of telephone encounters, outpatient appointments and telehealth visits. It is designated as Baby Friendly. 

This grant-funded home visitation program is for first-time mothers, who are less than 28-weeks’ gestation and utilize Medicaid services. 

Venous Access Team
registered nurse provides insertion and management of peripheral vascular access and defined extended intravenous lines. 

The Hyperbaric Oxygen Unit serves adult patients who meet the criteria for hyperbaric oxygen treatment. 

The Inpatient Wound Team develops care plans and makes appropriate recommendations for complex and minor wounds. The team provides system-wide education on pressure injury prevention, organizes system-wide skin-related prevalence surveys, and is a resource for skin and related wound support.  

The Heart Failure Center provides evidence-based heart failure management to monitor and support quality of life and prevent hospital readmissions.  

The Heart Wellness program provides outpatient cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, and medically supervised exercise therapy.  

The Gibbs Infusion Center is a 28-chair outpatient unit located on the second floor of the Gibbs Cancer Center. The primary populations served are school age through adult who require intravenous therapy or injections. 

This grant-funded program is offered to all newborns’ primary caregivers who reside in the city of Spartanburg. Shortly after the baby’s birth, a registered nurse will visit the home of the newborn, provide health checks for both the infant and the birth mother, assess needs, and offer supportive guidance on a wide variety of child and infant health-related topics.

Spartanburg Medical Center - Mary Black Campus

For more than 90 years, Spartanburg Medical Center - Mary Black Campus has provided healthcare to the Upstate. The facility features surgical suites, nationally accredited inpatient rehabilitation, a 24-bed emergency department, Neonatal Intensive Care services, geriatric psychiatric services, a joint care program, cardiology services, a nationally accredited chest pain center and a sleep center.

18-bed intensive and progressive care unit located on the floor one. This unit has the capacity to provide intensive care, progressive med/surg telemetry care. The primary populations served are adult patients following complex surgical procedures and life-threatening med/surg and acute conditions.

18-bed orthopedic unit located on floor two of Pavilion. Provides nursing care to acute and chronically ill adult patients, with a primary focus on patients requiring elective orthopedic joint surgery or injuries requiring surgical intervention. 

21-bed orthopedic unit located on floor three of Pavilion. The unit provides nursing care to chronically ill adult patients, with a primary focus on patients requiring elective joint orthopedic surgery or injuries requiring surgical intervention.

The Emergency Center at Mary Black is located on floor one of the main building. The population served includes all patients who arrive requesting medical screening exams. 

The surgical unit is located on floor one. There are nine operating suites, 15 preop and PACU bays and a state-of-the-art SPD department. Surgeries include general, orthopedics (designated as an orthopedic center of excellence for hip/knee), ENT, urology, spine, plastics, robotics, gynecology and ocular/retina.

Cherokee Medical Center Nursing

Cherokee Medical Center, a division of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, is a 125-bed acute care facility located in Gaffney, South Carolina, that services Cherokee County and the surrounding areas. Post-Acute Services

The Long-Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH) consists of two med/surg units and is licensed for 97 acute-care beds. The facility includes a three-bed ICU or transitional unit (TU). The hospital specializes in treating medically complex patients with the use of high technical modalities such as cardiac monitoring, advanced ventilator support, and multifaceted pharmacological and nutritional regimens. The average length of stay is 25 days or greater for Medicare patients. 

The SNF is a 25-bed facility specializing in short-term skilled nursing with rehabilitation for patients with diagnoses such as, but not limited to, aftercare joint replacement, traumatic fracture, surgery of the musculoskeletal system, as well as providing aftercare recovery post- complex hospitalization. The average length of stay is 14-20 days.

Home Health provides medical services to patients who are homebound, under the care of a licensed physician and in need of a skilled service such as nursing; physical, occupational or speech therapy; or medical social work. Home Health is an alternative to repeated hospitalizations, or an extended hospital stay. Working closely with the primary care provider, nurses and medical professionals provide care within the home, and via telemedicine. Spartanburg Regional Home Health serves Cherokee, Greenville, Spartanburg and Union counties. 

Spartanburg Regional Hospice provides a special kind of care for patients and their families, so that patients can live the remainder of their lives to the fullest with dignity and comfort. Hospice provides expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support tailored to the patient’s wishes. This care may be provided in the home, in home-like settings such as assisted living and long-term care facilities, or in the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, which is a 15-bed inpatient hospice facility. Spartanburg Regional Hospice serves Cherokee, Greenville, Spartanburg and Union counties. 

Ellen Sagar is a 113-bed long-term care, skilled nursing facility that offers both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care. 

Woodruff Manor is an 88-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility offering both short-term and long-term rehabilitation therapy.
